The photographer was Russ Dow. The photograph was taken in the the South Drift in Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass. Independence mine was the largest hard rock gold mine in southcentral Alaska.
Reason for Selection: The photograph depicts a key activity in the operation of a hard rock gold mine. Mucking in mining terms refers to the removal of the rock and ore after a dynamite shot has been fired. The ore is then crushed and further processed. The UAA archives holds the records ot the the Alaska Pacific Consolidated Mining Company which operated the mine. (KRH)
