I. GOAL: D-19 will serve the research needs of university students, faculty, and staff.
Objective 1: D-19 will subscribe to all the reports and hearings of the Congress: these provide a rich resource on many topics of contemporary interest to students.
Objective 2: D-19 will subscribe to all the annual reports of the departments and agencies: this is in response to faculty requests made early in the UAA depository program.
Objective 3: D-19 will subscribe to as many statistical publications as circumstances permit: these are heavily used in research projects. In conjunction with this objective, the reference staff will encourage use of the ASI Index: any statistical publication not available in D-19 can be obtained quickly from the State Library, which subscribes to ASI microfiche.
Objective 4: D-19 will subscribe to all material, or will buy a copy of all material relating to Alaska: one copy will be housed in the Alaska Room; the second copy when available will be housed in the documents collection.
Objective 5: D-19 will subscribe to documents relevant to business and especially international business: this responds to the needs of the College of Business and Public Policy.
Objective 6: D-19 will subscribe to documents relevant to Arctic studies.
Objective 7: D-19 will subscribe to maps and charts in support of geography studies and for general use.
Objective 8: D-19 will subscribe in the areas of American history and military history.
Objective 9: D-19 will subscribe to documents relating to all aspects of education: this will address needs of the College of Education.
Objective 10: D-19 will encourage UAA community participation in the annual subscription update cycle.
II. GOAL: D-19 will serve the research needs of Southcentral Alaska.
Objective 1: D-19 will subscribe to all medical documents requested by Health Sciences Information Services; these will be housed in documents or in Health Sciences according to need. These choices will also serve the needs of the UAA School of Nursing and the Geriatric Education Center.
Objective 2: D-19 will work with the other depositories in Anchorage to coordinate subscriptions so the Anchorage public will have a good chance of getting most of their needs met within driving distance.
Objective 3: D-19 will work with the statewide documents collection development program coordinated by the State Library to provide for the research needs of all Alaskans.
III. GOAL: D-19 will be mindful of the cost to taxpayers of maintaining the documents program.
Objective 1: All subscriptions which have outworn their usefulness or proved of marginal value will be cancelled.
Objective 2: D-19 will not subscribe to more documents than it can quickly and efficiently bring under bibliographic control and house in an appropriate way.
Objective 3: Within the constraints of GPO/FDLP formatting decisions, D-19 will incline towards tangible products for highly favored documents, but will otherwise migrate to electronic products as quickly as possible, in part as a cost-saving measure and in part as a concession to the greater accessibility of the electronic format to a larger audience.
