Veterans Day is a holiday that takes place every year on November 11. It is a day to celebrate and thank those individuals that have served or are currently serving in all branches of the United States Military. It is to honor those brave men and women for their service and for fighting for the freedom of others. A classmate may be a Veteran. Student Veterans are more common now than before. They may have more life experience than another students that they are able to translate over into their career field after graduation.

The Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos is a holiday that has been more commonly celebrated. It takes place at midnight on October 31 to November 2. Day of the Dead History It is the day when the souls of those that have passed on come back to reunite with those that are living. It is only during this time that the door from the land of the living to the land of those that have passed on is open.

An altar or ofrenda is where pictures of loved ones that have passed on are placed in the home of a living family member. Offerings such as food, drinks, candles, and other items that they enjoyed while they were living can be placed there. Toys are commonly placed for children that have passed on. Offerings can also be placed at the grave of the loved one. Marigold flowers are used to decorate the ofrenda (altar) or grave.

The bright orange and yellow Marigold flower is commonly associated with the Day of the Dead. It is to celebrate the life of the loved one and its petals help to form a path from the front door of a living family member to the inside of the home where the ofrenda (altar) is located.
